Chapter 24

Samantha slipped the two rubber bands into the front pockets of her jeans. If Cooper stared at her chest one more time, she’d kick him in the balls. He’d been ogling her chest all night.

The three beers rushed through her bloodstream. Too buzzed to drive, but she had to get away from this ass. Luckily, her initial embarrassment of him seeing her perform had vanished. Singing belonged to her and she wouldn’t let anyone ruin that ever again. She chose an acoustic night far from her hometown, far from everyone. Or, so she thought. Of all bars, Cooper managed to find her. What were the chances? Maybe he really was stalking her. Hopefully, he’d never show up again.

For the first time all year, Samantha found something she could call her own. She felt comfortable in the Déjà Vu bar and escaped here every Tuesday to sing. She could be herself and made a few new friends along the way. Friends that didn’t care what she looked like, what she drank, or what she talked about.

She enjoyed wearing faded jeans and her funky T-shirts again. Glad to drink beers and not the syrupy drinks Cara made her buy. She loved being silly, and joking around with the other performers. No one laughed at her or made her feel like she had to be someone else. She finally fit in. This is who she was and Cooper was not going to take that from her.

She searched the bar, but most of her friends had left. She shoved her hands into her back pockets, digging for her car key and caught Cooper’s eyes wander to her chest again. That was it.

“Do you have serious issues?”

“Huh?” He looked genuinely confused.

“How many times are you going to look at my boobs?”

“What? No! I wasn’t…I was looking at your…” He stammered while his hands flew around wildly, pointing at her chest and then making their way back toward his sides. “They’re looking at me.”

“What! How dare you. They’re not things. And they don’t look at people, so stop looking at them! You did the same thing that night in your office.”

“No. The eyeballs. On the pie. The eyeballs are giving me dirty looks. They’re kinda real.”

Samantha looked down at her T-shirt. With her hands buried deep into her back pockets, her boobs stuck out like she’d done it on purpose. The eyeballs appeared to be staring up at her. She ripped her hands out of the jean pockets and folded them over her chest. Then glanced down again. The pie appeared to be suffocating under her embrace. This whole thing was humiliating. Why’d he always bring out the worst in her? He never failed to see her at her lowest.

Realizing her mistake, Samantha lowered her hands, and huffed. “I’m sorry. I thought…”

“I’m sorry. I really wasn’t…”

“I know. I know. What were you saying, now? You broke up with Tiara?” She found it hard to believe Tiara would let him break up with her. She appeared to be the type to break up with her men.
